Hi, everyone!
I think an explanation is needed: I'm a Christian, Orthodox to be exact. And there's something in Orthodox Church called Lent. It's 40 days where Christians practice praying and repentance sins. During those weeks, Easter fasting happens. You can't eat meat and dairy products (if you want to be very strict). Drinking and smoking are also not allowed. It's not compulsory, but most religious people do it.
Here's my story.
I'm religious, but not crazy religious. I would not consider myself a perfect Christian. So, if topics like this make you uncomfortable, this post is probably not for you. I'm not trying to make you believe in anything. I'm just sharing my personal experience since it was my first Easter fast. This intro was long enough so, thank you if you're still reading.
The idea was born on a sunny afternoon. I was watching an interesting video explaining how veganism helps the planet. I want to become vegan, but my mom doesn't allow me because 'I'm too young to decide'. *rolling my eyes rn* And the brainy person in me decided to trick her. She was on board with the idea of me fasting. That was all I needed.
So, long story short, I succeeded. I ate mostly vegan, sometimes vegetarian - when there were no vegan options except boring salads. But that's maybe because I live in Bulgaria a.k.a one of those countries where it's incredibly hard to find vegan foods on the menu in most restaurants.
What did I gain from this experience?
I learnt some delicious and easy vegan recipes. You can't fully appreciate someone's effort before you try for yourself - now I know how hard it is. I saved money, but that could be because of the freaking pandemic going around and me staying home. And I discovered tofu - the best thing ever!!!
Did I lose anything?
Nah, not really. However, I was frustrated at times because my grandparents, some teachers and classmates thought what I was doing, was ridiculous.
What's my diet now?
I am trying to incorporate as many vegan meals as possible. I stopped eating fatty meats - pork, beef, etc. I cut down dairy milk because damn, oat milk is delicious. I eat cheese, eggs, chicken and fish. For now, I'm ok with this way of eating.
Would I do this again and do I recommend it?
I'm doing it again for Christmas. Not for the religion aspect, despite the fact it feels rewarding. It forces me to explore new foods, some not so tasty. *remembering an awful vegan burger* And heck yea, I recommend it. It was an eyeopener. If you are not religious, do it to help the planet and the animals.
I had an amazing Easter celebration. I hope you enjoyed this post! Remember to wash your hands, stay home and stay calm.
I love you! Hope to see you soon!💝
